Heavy overnight rainfall caused widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across Delhi-NCR, while the IMD issued a red alert and warned of more heavy rain in the coming hours.

Heavy Rain Batters Delhi-NCR, Triggers Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions

Heavy rains during the night lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), causing to waterlogging and chaos in the area on Thursday morning. The rain, accompanied by lightning and heavy winds, led to flooding of many roads, resulting in traffic jams in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), three meteorological stations in Delhi registered rainfall more than 75 mm in the past 24 hours and classified it as heavy rainfall. The IMD has also issued a red alert for Delhi NCR for a short period at the onset of Thursday, indicating the probability of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. A yellow alert continues to prevail for the remainder of the day.

The heavy rainfall during night time had filled up some low-lying areas with rainwater collecting on major roads and underpasses. Movement of vehicles were very slow in some parts of the capital city because of the presence of flooded road sections, tree branches, and poor visibility. Civic bodies were mobilised for removing water from roads to normalise traffic flow.

While the showers helped the residents to breathe a sigh of relief after a period of humid weather conditions, social media was flooded with pictures and videos showing waterlogged roads and cars getting stuck in deep water pools in several areas.

IMD has predicted that the wet conditions will continue for the days ahead, with showers of moderate to heavy intensity along with thunder and lightning seen over Delhi-NCR. Some isolated areas are predicted to experience 180-250 mm rainfall in the next 24 hours, creating fears of water logging and localized floods and traffic snarls.

Residents have been advised to stay inside their houses during heavy rainfall and should avoid flooded streets, avoid coming near any electric poles, and follow all the weather advisories that will be issued officially. The motorists have been asked to plan their trips beforehand considering that there may be traffic jams.

IMD stated that the overall weather conditions will see mostly cloudy weather along with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms continuing throughout the day. It is estimated that the temperatures will remain lower than usual because of the presence of clouds and rains in the area.
