HPCL reports progress in reducing plastic waste through recycled packaging, recyclable materials, and EPR-compliant circular economy initiatives.

HPCL Advances Sustainable Packaging and Circular Economy Practices in Lubricants Segment

On World Environment Day, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) highlighted its ongoing efforts toward environmental sustainability, focusing on cleaner and more responsible industrial practices. Environmental stewardship is positioned as part of its operational approach, driven by innovation, responsibility and broader nation-building objectives.

In HP Lubricants, efforts are being made in terms of sustainability in packaging for minimising the company’s effect on the environment. In the products that HP Lubricants offers in the form of lubricants, from 30% to 40% Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) has been used in the packaging. HP Racer Green is a product line that uses 100% PCR packaging.

The company also makes use of 100% recyclable tin packaging boxes as part of its packaging process, which is geared towards waste reduction and improved recyclability. This can be seen through the national framework that is Mission LiFE.

Post Consumer Recycled Material (PCR) is the name given to recycled plastics such as PET, HDPE, and PPCP, which have been cleaned, processed, and turned into granules for re-use in packaging production. PCR material goes through a supply chain that includes collection of plastic waste primarily from the informal sector via a network of scrap collectors.

The initiatives are aligned with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Under these regulations, companies are required to ensure both the collection of equivalent quantities of plastic placed in the market and the use of recycled plastic in packaging. HPCL reported 100% collection compliance for FY 2025–26 across applicable packaging and used oil obligations, with around 12,000 tonnes of plastic introduced into the market already collected and redirected for reuse.

To ensure continuous compliance with regulations, efforts are being made to extend the usage of recycled plastic in packaging processes for other products as well. Even though recycled plastic is more expensive than virgin plastic, its usage is being encouraged because of the benefits that will be gained from it.
