India has issued heatwave warnings across several states as rising temperatures and possible El Niño conditions raise concerns over extreme weather and monsoon disruption.

India Issues Heatwave Warning Amid El Niño Weather Concerns

Heat wave alerts are out by the weather department of India as temperature levels are expected to soar in several parts of the north and central regions of the country before the start of the monsoon season.

The IMD has stated that temperature levels will exceed normal in Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh in the coming weeks. In some locations, temperatures above 45 degrees centigrade have been observed.

The alert follows reports about a possible emergence of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. The occurrence of El Niño conditions leads to higher temperatures and a dry spell in South Asia, thereby affecting monsoons in India.

According to weather scientists, the climate conditions could trigger a prolonged heat wave period in the summer months. During 2025, India was hit by a long stretch of heat waves in several states.

Several hospitals from different parts of the country have recorded cases of illness caused by excessive heat during the summer.

An increased usage of cooling systems has seen a huge surge in the demand for power to an all-time high.

As per information from the IMD, minimum temperatures in urban centers will be higher than normal, meaning there will be no respite from heat even during the nighttime hours. The authorities have suggested that people should refrain from venturing outside during the afternoons and stay well hydrated.

Heatwaves have been known to hamper agricultural production in several countries, and concerns have been raised regarding their effect on crops such as wheat, pulses and vegetables. In addition, several states are keeping a close eye on the water levels in various reservoirs as the monsoons approach.

There have been several studies conducted in recent years linking the occurrence of heatwaves and rising global temperatures in South Asia.

Central and state governments have implemented heat action plans in vulnerable districts. These include emergency medical assistance, public advisories, and provisions for drinkable water supplies. Some schools amended their timings so that children would not be exposed to the heat.

According to weather officials, El Niño conditions developing over the coming months may affect monsoon performance and summer weather in India. The India Meteorological Department will issue updated forecasts for the season in the next several weeks.
