India has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting energy security, clean energy transition, innovation, and sustainable development as it prepares to assume the BRICS Chairmanship in 2026.
India is poised to take over the Chair of the BRICS group in 2026, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated the country's pledge to promote energy security, resilience, equity, and sustainability in the global energy landscape through the lens of the Global South.
The remarks were made while sharing Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar's article, which envisages energy systems that are resilient to shocks and stresses through effective domestic policies and enhanced international cooperation.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar added in his post that India wants to build a "secure, resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for the global energy landscape that puts the Global South at the centre of it all."
Cooperation and innovation are key to achieving the goals of developing economies as they navigate the fast-changing global energy landscape in an effort to achieve energy security, growth, and sustainability, Khattar said in his article. He said that India would bring this common vision to fruition during its term as Chair of BRICS, as it seeks to strengthen cooperation in the areas of universalisation of energy access, clean energy transition, technology and innovation, capacity building, and other related sectors.
Khattar also reiterated the significant progress made by India in the energy sector. The country has improved access to electricity, increased its installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, and achieved more than 50 per cent of its installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources ahead of schedule, exceeding its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target.
Other measures to strengthen energy security include coal gasification, green hydrogen, electric mobility, and further strengthening of the power transmission network. The country's power infrastructure is also being updated with the help of digital tools such as smart meters and the India Energy Stack.
Given the complementary strengths of the countries in the BRICS group, the bloc has the potential to build secure and sustainable energy systems and promote the Global South through enhanced international cooperation.
