The proposed partnership shows India's growing focus on securing critical resources through international collaboration.

India Proposes ‘Make in Russia for India’ Model to Strengthen Critical Minerals and Fertiliser Supply Chains

India has proposed a new “Make in Russia for India” strategy that would help enhance India’s collaboration with Russia in areas like fertiliser production, minerals, mining and heavy industries. This new initiative seeks to ensure the steady availability of the necessary raw materials and resources needed by India for its agricultural, renewable energy, and manufacturing needs.

This concept came up in the context of talks regarding the development of economic relations between the two nations, especially the encouragement of joint ventures between Indian and Russian firms in Russia. This would make it possible to create different supply chains for India's economy without being overly dependent on the rest of the world for minerals and resources.

Minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth metals are vital in the production of electric cars, batteries, renewables, and other advanced technologies. With many nations trying to acquire these minerals, India is also considering collaborations with other nations to ensure diverse supply of these resources.

Cooperation in fertilisers continues to be an important part of India and Russia. Its availability of fertilisers is essential for agriculture and food for maintaining security as India is one of the world’s top users of fertilisers. Recent talks between the two countries have focused on expanding to collaborate more widely in fertiliser production, supply and long-term partnerships.

The suggested model is in line with India’s plan to source its requirements of vital minerals while minimizing any potential risks due to global disruptions in the markets. The industry experts believe that collaborating with Russia in the mining of minerals may also present an opportunity for technology transfer.

The move is taking place amidst efforts by India to speed up its transformation to renewable energy and enhance domestic production capacity. Availability of strategic minerals, among other raw materials, is expected to play a key part in enhancing India’s energy security and overall industrial competitiveness.
