Maharashtra Charts Green Path Forward With Focus On Just Transition

Maharashtra government and iFOREST partnered to host a conference titled “Just Transition to Support Green Growth and Inclusive Climate Action in Maharashtra” on 25 June in Mumbai.

It comes at a crucial time, as the state plans its journey to becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2047. With many communities still economically dependent on fossil fuel industries, the focus is now on ensuring that this transition is not only climate-smart but also socially just.

They have also planned to release India’s first regional Just Transition investment plan. The plan, developed by iFOREST, aims to transform the Chandrapur-Nagpur-Yavatmal belt—one of Maharashtra’s most coal-intensive regions—into a hub of green jobs, clean industries, and sustainable growth.

“We need to start looking at the people behind the energy transition—those whose livelihoods, land, and futures are tied to coal,” said a spokesperson from iFOREST. “This plan is about creating meaningful alternatives, not just cutting emissions.”

The event will feature discussions on how Maharashtra can lead India’s green shift while protecting the most vulnerable. Experts will explore how climate goals can align with economic priorities through clean energy, innovative technology, and inclusive policy.

By placing people at the heart of climate action, the conference aims to kickstart a deeper conversation—one that ensures progress doesn’t leave anyone behind.
