Maruti Suzuki Highlights Charging Infrastructure as Key to India’s EV Future

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has underscored the need for extensive public charging infrastructure to support the country’s electric vehicle (EV) adoption goals. The company revealed that, while EV retail sales have nearly doubled annually, total penetration remains low—at just 4.5% of the passenger vehicle market—due mainly to range anxiety and lack of charging points, particularly for intercity travel.

Despite launching its first electric model, the e-VITARA, Maruti Suzuki notes that consumers are reluctant to make an EV their only car, citing worries about charge access, especially on highways or in rural areas. The carmaker is working to install charging facilities in 100 cities and has called on the government and industry partners to invest further in both urban and intercity charging solutions.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reports a 93% year-on-year growth in electric passenger vehicle sales, but Maruti Suzuki insists that broader adoption will depend on making reliable, rapid, and widely available public charging a reality. Furthermore, the company advocates for consumer choice regarding conventional, hybrid, and electric options, ensuring customers can select technology that matches their lifestyle without concern for fuel or power limitations.
