Tech behemoth Meta has made a significant step in its clean energy goals by signing two long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with top energy provider AES to purchase 650 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity in Texas and Kansas. These agreements will provide renewable energy to power Meta's fast-growing data center operations in the United States, bolstering the company's dedication to sustainability and its objective of achieving net-zero emissions throughout its whole value chain by 2030.
The solar electricity generated under the new PPAs will come from projects being developed by AES in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) area, which includes many central U.S. states and regulates the wholesale electricity market and power grid. By obtaining energy from this area, Meta guarantees a steady and inexpensive supply of renewable electricity to power its enormous data operations, which support platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
