Over 41 million people in France are affected by an intense heatwave, leading to school disruptions, health warnings, and renewed concerns over rising temperatures.
Half of the French population is under a heat alert as the country continues to experience scorching weather conditions in many regions. The authorities have warned millions of people about the high temperatures. In addition, the schools and other public services have put in place steps to reduce heat risks.
The French meteorology department has issued an orange heat alert to more than 41 million people, which is the second-highest warning in the country. The heat alert is covering the Paris area as well as other parts of eastern and central France. There are expectations that temperatures will rise to 40°C in some regions in the next few days.
The heat wave has impacted the educational services in France. According to the Ministry of Education, 784 schools have changed their timetables due to the high temperatures. In addition, 150 schools have temporarily shut down.
Government officers have encouraged the populace to be cautious in their conduct. For instance, French President Emmanuel Macron encouraged caution in vulnerable groups such as elderly people and those suffering from pre-existing ailments. On the other hand, the health officers advised people to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities outdoors when it is too hot.
These precautions come at a time when the country is getting ready to celebrate Fête de la Musique in the upcoming days. The French government has released health instructions to protect citizens against heatstroke during the celebration.
The heat wave currently hitting France has brought up issues regarding the safety of citizens. It has been reported that a young 30-year-old man has lost his life in an athletics track located outside Paris city in the duration of the heat wave. Though his death has not been attributed to the heat wave yet, there is still caution about the risks involved.
This is the second heat wave witnessed in France within the current year. The previous wave of unusually hot days was recorded in May, affecting many regions in France. According to the data released by weather authorities, this is the hottest spring recorded in France since the beginning of recordings in 1900, when average temperatures remained high during March through May.
It has been observed that heat waves are becoming increasingly common in Europe during recent decades. The reason for such an occurrence is attributed to the increasing temperature levels globally, thus making it more likely for hot periods to emerge.
This latest heat wave follows other instances of high-temperature periods witnessed in Europe during recent years.
