With Earth Day on the horizon on April 22, PlanetPlay, the not-for-profit leader in the convergence of video games and environmental activism, is launching a dynamic wave of campaigns to activate the global gaming population for sustainable action. With over three billion players across the globe, PlanetPlay is dedicated to harnessing the combined force of play into actual environmental impact.
Celebrating the 45th anniversary of Earth Day—a yearly observance with the sole purpose of creating international awareness in the protection of the environment—PlanetPlay is joining forces with this year's theme: 'Our Power, Our Planet'. The organisation's momentum gets even stronger with the rollout of its Make Green Moves (MGM) campaign augmented by three new celebrity ambassadors announced.
Additions to PlanetPlay's expanding list of supporters include Sir Ian Livingstone CBE, the father of the UK games industry and a long-standing supporter of the educational and creative potential of games; Briana Evigan, American actress and dancer with a strong passion for environmental activism; and Pascal Wehrlein, a Formula E World Champion whose own career has been marked by a love of innovation and green technology. Each contributes a unique voice and extensive reach, bolstering PlanetPlay's worldwide influence.
These new ambassadors will work with PlanetPlay not only to promote sustainability but also to provide unique in-game content that will be featured in partner games. They join the ranks of previous PlanetPlay supporters like Demi Lovato, David Hasselhoff, and Joe Jonas, who are assisting in spreading the organisation's message through their channels.
Briana Evigan also highlighted the need to bring people together using good storytelling. "I am so thrilled to be an Ambassador for PlanetPlay because it's allowing us to merge storytelling and gaming in a way that allows people to come back to the center of the earth," she said. "Stories have always been how we heal, connect, and grow, eventually having the power to change the lives of millions.
Sir Ian Livingstone added weight to these comments, stressing the power of change that games offer: "All my life I've seen what games can unlock imagination, skill and generations of people. Here with PlanetPlay, we can use that potential for the good of the world. I'm excited to join a movement to make play with purpose, making gamers into heroes in their community, leading toward a more green future.
Pascal Wehrlein, with his experience in Formula E racing that bridges sports and sustainability, expressed his passion: "As Formula E World Champion, I've experienced how innovation and technology can propel genuine progress towards sustainability. Gaming has the ability to drive change globally. That's why I'm thrilled to be part of PlanetPlay – we can motivate millions of gamers to make a tangible difference for the planet while enjoying what we love."
To mark Earth Month festivities, PlanetPlay will introduce MGM-branded content into leading games like Avakin Life by Lockwood Publishing, Fishing Clash by Ten Square Games, Peridot by Niantic, and Subway Surfers by SYBO. For April 22-29, the program will be featured on Google Play with its own campaign page. Gamers will receive Play Points boosters for buying MGM products in taking part games—a fun and rewarding way to green your game.
In addition to the game initiatives, PlanetPlay is announcing an ambitious Earth Month fundraising campaign. The target is to mobilize contributions from individual players as well as game studios to support an expanding slate of climate-beneficial projects. Notably, 100% of donations will be channeled to environmental activities, meaning every donation is invested in real-world sustainability action. Contributions can be made on PlanetPlay's official campaign page at planetplay.com/mgm.
Rhea Loucas, PlanetPlay CEO, highlighted the role that gaming plays in contemporary environmental campaigning. "Video games have an amazing capacity to bring people together, drive action, and make change seem tangible. Earth Month and Earth Day are pillars of moments for the sustainability movement, and we're stepping up our efforts to meet that passion," she added. "From having to greet influential new Ambassadors, to rolling out a donations campaign – we are more dedicated than ever to enabling gamers to make green moves that matter."
With its progressive ethos and growing network of high-profile advocates, PlanetPlay is demonstrating that purpose and play are not mutually exclusive. By reimagining every day gaming as a force for good, the organisation is not only changing the face of being a gamer in 2025 but also mapping out a powerful trajectory for international environmental action.
