The Prime Minister's office convened a high-level meeting to discuss the impact of the El Nino weather pattern on different sectors of the economy. It was also directed to monitor the evolving situation. Along with the state government, an assessment of the impact in the vulnerable districts was also directed by the Ministry.
The meeting was attended by secretaries and senior officials from more than 15 ministries and departments, including Ministries of Agriculture, Power, Co-operation, Health & Family Welfare, Economic Affairs, Consumer Affairs, Rural Development, Animal Husbandry, Fertilizers, Earth Sciences, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD). They discussed the country’s preparedness for the situation and also measures to protect the agriculture sector, water sources, food supplies, public health, and other sectors.
During the meeting, IMD authorities highlighted the situation regarding rainfall scenario as of July 7, where although the southwest monsoon has been delayed by approximately 10 days in some regions like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, the rain deficit has reduced to 12 per cent. The IMD also reported at the meeting that monsoon conditions had improved in the first week of July, along with the prediction of weak to moderate El Nino till the months of July and August, but added that an El Nino year is not always a deficient monsoon year.
