Rajasthan has emerged as India’s third-largest state in rooftop solar installations, with over 2.45 lakh systems installed and more than 1.43 lakh households reporting zero electricity bills.
Rajasthan has become the third-largest state in India in terms of rooftop solar installations, and the rapid uptake is due to favourable policies and greater consumer participation. Over 2.45 lakh rooftop solar plants have been installed in the state with an installed capacity of nearly 2,090 MW, sources claim.
With the increasing number of installations, changes have been observed in consumers' electricity usage. In total, over 1.43 lakh consumers now report zero electricity bills, having shifted to rooftop solar plants for power production.
Sources said that Rajasthan continues to see regular daily gains in solar power usage, with over 675 to 700 consumers switching over to rooftop solar plants every day. The installation trend picked up speed with the start of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the central government in 2024.
As part of the project, more than 1.77 lakh rooftop solar plants with a total capacity of 686 MW were installed in the state within two years. The installation speed kept improving on a consistent basis, showing an increase of over two to two-and-a-half times per six-month period.
Installation of rooftop solar has increased at a significant pace every month. As per recent statistics, about 20,000 units of rooftop solar have been set up in March 2026 alone, which is amongst the highest figures reported on a monthly basis from the state. Similarly, even daily record figures have touched heights, with more than 900 units being installed on a particular day.
Subsidy disbursements have also played an important part in increasing the number of people adopting rooftop solar panels in India. Under the centrally sponsored scheme, subsidies are being provided to people up to ₹78,000 each, whose disbursal normally takes place within weeks of the installation. To date, more than ₹1,100 crore worth of subsidy payments have been made to 1.5 lakh consumers.
Rooftop solar adoption in Rajasthan is part of its overall growth in the Indian renewables industry. Already, Rajasthan has had good geographical conditions for the setting up of solar panels, with high solar radiation levels and huge amounts of land to generate electricity.
In terms of overall rooftop solar capacity, Gujarat and Maharashtra are ahead, followed by Rajasthan in third place.
