From tracking biodiversity to improving climate planning, India's largest tree inventory database could transform how the country manages its forests and protects ecosystems.
Scientists have compiled India's largest meta-dataset of tree inventory studies, bringing together decades of ecological research into a single national database that could significantly improve forest conservation, biodiversity monitoring and climate change planning. The initiative is expected to provide researchers and policymakers with a stronger scientific foundation for managing the country's diverse forest ecosystems.
The new database named INvenTree (INdia Tree Inventory Network) has been created on the basis of data obtained from 465 peer-reviewed papers reporting on tree inventories carried out during the period between 1991 and 2023. In total, these papers account for 4,653.64 hectares of forests in India with different types of vegetation.
According to scholars, there have been hundreds of inventory studies for Indian forests during the last three decades, but a lot of this data was dispersed among different research articles. This initiative will enable the integration of all this data into one dataset which can be used by researchers to understand the dynamics of the forest system.
Supporting Climate and Biodiversity Goals
The database is set to contribute greatly towards developing robust policies in India on matters climate and environment. The forest cover acts as a natural sink for carbon dioxide, thus its importance in combating climate change. Information on tree species and distribution is important in determining the amount of carbon that the forests absorb.
The dataset can also support biodiversity conservation by identifying regions with rich tree diversity, monitoring changes in forest ecosystems and helping authorities prioritise areas that require restoration or protection.
