Simple Energy Launches India’s First Rare Earth-Free EV Motors
Hosur, Tamil Nadu: Simple Energy, one of India’s leading electric scooter makers, has started commercial production of the country’s first rare earth-free electric vehicle motors at its Hosur facility.
In response to global supply chain disruptions and China’s export controls on rare earth elements, Simple has developed motors that use optimised composites and proprietary algorithms instead of heavy rare earth magnets — while still delivering high torque and performance.
Strategic Significance for India’s EV Sector
-
Strengthens ‘Make in India’ localisation and reduces reliance on foreign supply chains.
-
Enhances resilience against geopolitical disruptions.
-
Matches the performance of legacy rare earth-based systems while improving sustainability and self-reliance.
Future Outlook
Already powering Simple’s scooters, these motors set a precedent for Indian EV manufacturers. The breakthrough not only positions the company for potential IPO growth but also marks a strategic leap for India’s EV technology and industrial independence.
