Amazon and Skyborn sign Germany’s largest 600 MW clean energy agreement for the Gennaker wind project.
Amazon and BlackRock-backed Skyborn have signed a 600 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for carbon-free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. This marks the largest single clean energy purchase agreement signed in Germany to date.
The deal will help develop the Gennaker offshore wind project. It is expected to be Germany’s largest wind farm in the Baltic Sea, providing carbon-free electricity that could power over one million German households annually.
Skyborn Renewables, a German offshore wind infrastructure company, is driving the project with a focus on offshore wind development, construction, and operations. The company was established in 2022 after Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), which is now owned by BlackRock, acquired wpd offshore and launched the Skyborn platform.
Located about 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Gennaker project will feature 63 offshore wind turbines. Each turbine will have a capacity of 15 MW, resulting in a total of 976.5 MW of offshore wind capacity added to Germany’s electricity system.
Skyborn Chief Development Officer Adam Thomsen noted that the project shows the potential of large-scale offshore wind development. He emphasized the need to connect renewable energy generation with infrastructure that ensures a stable energy system.
Construction of the Gennaker offshore wind farm is set to begin after financial close in summer 2026, with operations expected to start by the end of 2028.
This wind farm is part of Germany’s goal to reach 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030. It is also expected to boost renewable electricity generation in the Baltic Sea and strengthen the country’s energy security.
Amazon has grown its renewable energy portfolio globally through investments and power purchase agreements. According to BloombergNEF, the company secured 10.22 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2025, making it one of the largest corporate buyers of clean energy that year.
Amazon has invested in over 700 renewable energy projects worldwide, totaling more than 40 GW of carbon-free energy capacity. In Germany, the company’s carbon-free energy portfolio includes 12 projects with a combined capacity exceeding 1.3 GW.
Once they are operational, these projects are expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power more than 1.8 million German homes each year.
Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said the agreement gives Skyborn support to advance the Gennaker project and increase offshore wind capacity in Germany’s power grid.
The companies stated that the agreement reflects the rising corporate demand for renewable energy as businesses seek long-term access to carbon-free electricity and support the growth of clean energy infrastructure.
