Solar Water Systems Aid Cheetah Cubs’ Survival in Kuno National Park

Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh has implemented solar-powered water systems to help cheetah cubs survive extreme summer heat in 2025. These systems ensure a steady water supply, supporting India’s cheetah reintroduction project. The initiative highlights innovative conservation strategies to protect wildlife amid rising temperatures.

Kuno National Park, home to reintroduced cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia, faced challenges in 2023 when three cubs died due to extreme heat. In response, park authorities installed solar-powered water lift systems in 2024, which proved effective in 2025. These systems pump water through a 13-km pipeline, filling dry nullahs and water points across the park. In February 2025, South African cheetah Veera gave birth to two cubs, and in April, cheetah Nirva delivered five, with three surviving. The cubs and mothers relied on these water points to cope with temperatures exceeding 45°C.

The solar water systems reduce dependence on manual water delivery, ensuring consistent access during heatwaves. Additional measures, like water guzzlers and manual spraying, further support wildlife. The initiative has stabilized the cheetah population, with surviving cubs showing resilience to harsh conditions. The park’s efforts align with India’s broader conservation goals, including protecting endangered species and restoring ecosystems.

Challenges include maintaining infrastructure during monsoons and expanding water systems to cover larger areas as the cheetah population grows. The project’s success depends on continued funding and technical expertise. Kuno’s approach could serve as a model for other Indian parks facing climate-related threats to wildlife.
