The UK completed 269,000 solar installations in 2025, the highest annual total on record, with rooftop systems accounting for most new deployments, according to government data.

UK Records Highest Annual Solar Deployment With 269,000 Installations

The United Kingdom saw its highest annual installations of solar panels with a tally of 269,000 solar installations in 2025, per the numbers provided by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This number is an increase of 37% compared to the previous year.

Approximately 255,000, or 95%, of the installations were roof-mounted systems installed in domestic, commercial, and other buildings. According to government statistics, a roof-mounted solar panel system was being installed once every two minutes throughout the year.

Solar installations have been consistently high in 2026. In April, more than 23,000 solar installations took place, in which residences made up more than half of the total installations. According to government statistics, nine of the top ten monthly installations ever recorded occurred in the last twelve months.

Increased solar installations have contributed to the overall solar power production in the UK. According to the analysis by Ember, the amount of solar power produced in Great Britain between January and June 2025 was 9.91 terawatt-hours, a record high in the six months.

According to Ember, records for solar power production had been set in a number of months in that year. Increase in installed capacity, along with favorable weather conditions, played a key role in the rise in production levels.

Though rooftop solar systems dominated installation figures, there was also an expansion in utility-scale solar generation capacity. This had been recorded by the government in its statistics on the expansion of both residential and utility-scale solar generation.

Solar power generation is one of the various sources of renewable energy used in the United Kingdom. Renewable energy generation has increased in the country in recent times as a result of the declining use of fossil fuels in electricity production.

According to the most recent statistics, roof-mounted solar systems continued to dominate installation numbers in 2025.
