Vikram Solar and the Tamil Nadu government have signed an MoU for a ₹15,037 crore Battery Energy Storage System plant aimed at strengthening renewable energy storage capacity in the state.
India's clean energy transition has received a boost with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between solar manufacturing leader Vikram Solar of Kolkata and the Tamil Nadu government for the installation of a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) plant with an investment of ₹15,037 crore.
The plant will be set up in the SIPCOT Gangaikondan Industrial Park, a crucial location in Tirunelveli district that will help boost the state's renewable energy growth. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar Gyanesh Chaudhary, along with senior officials, attended the signing of the MoU. The project is expected to create 2,670 jobs, helping to make Tamil Nadu a manufacturing and clean energy powerhouse.
The BESS plant is a crucial component of Vikram Solar's goals to reach 15GWh of battery storage by FY 2030. The ability to store intermittent renewable energy, such as solar power, and supply it to the grid when required is becoming a key component of a renewable energy-based power system. Battery energy storage is a key growth area for Vikram Solar, driven by policy support and offering potential margins, Chaudhary said.
The manufacturing facilities of Vikram Solar are being expanded in the state of Tamil Nadu. The company is busy establishing module manufacturing units in Vallam and Oragadam in the district of Kanchipuram, along with a solar module manufacturing unit and solar cell manufacturing unit in Gangaikondan, from where the first solar module has come off the assembly line this week.
The industry experts highlight the need for massive battery production in order to meet the energy storage demands for large-scale adoption of solar and wind power, forming the backbone of India's renewable energy goals. This investment can boost Tamil Nadu's clean-tech initiatives and fuel its already strong standing in the renewable energy sector, while enhancing the region's overall potential for sustainable growth and development.
