Andhra Pradesh is accelerating rooftop solar installations for SC and ST households under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, aiming to reduce electricity costs and expand clean energy access.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has instructed the power distribution corporations of the state to increase rooftop solar installation for SC/ST households within the purview of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, to lower electricity costs and increase access to solar energy.
Over 20,000 SC/ST households in the state have been installed with rooftop solar panels by the government, and plans to scale up the process in the coming months have been communicated by the state government.
The instruction came after an analysis of the ongoing efforts and stressed the need for quicker implementation through efficient cooperation between utilities and concerned administrative agencies. The programme has been implemented under the utility-based aggregation approach, wherein the power distribution companies take care of installing and deploying solar energy systems for identified households.
The programme seeks to benefit households with high electricity expenses, provides them with relief from heavy electricity costs while ensuring the continuous availability of power.
Another indication that the benefits will be extended not just to members of the SC/ST community but also to other economically weaker segments of society, including the Backward Classes, has been made by the state.
The PM Surya Ghar scheme, which was initiated by the central government in 2024, offers financial support for the use of rooftop solar panels and seeks to enhance the penetration of solar power in India. The subsidy offered under this program would be enough to cover a considerable amount of the cost incurred during the installation process.
Andhra Pradesh is already ahead in terms of adopting the utility model under the program, in which demand is aggregated, and installation is streamlined. The adoption of this model is anticipated to help the state achieve its overall objectives for renewable energy generation.
Efforts to accelerate installation processes have been accelerated because of the national campaign to install rooftop solar panels in India. Nevertheless, certain issues persist that pose impediments to installing solar panels.
For Andhra Pradesh, the immediate focus remains on execution — ensuring that identified households receive functional systems on time and that the benefits of lower energy costs translate into measurable economic relief.
