BRICS labour representatives called for responsible artificial intelligence adoption, stressing that technology should enhance workers’ capabilities while ensuring employment security, reskilling opportunities and social protection.

BRICS Labour Dialogue Calls for Responsible AI Adoption to Protect Workers’ Future

The growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in workplaces was a key discussion point at the at the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Labour meeting, where representatives highlighted the need to ensure that technological advancement does not come at the cost of employment security. India, which chaired the meeting, emphasised the importance of creating a balanced ecosystem where AI supports workers, improves productivity, and contributes to inclusive economic growth.

The delegates from BRICS countries in the trade unions had some reservations regarding the effect that the quick deployment of automation would have on the workers. They highlighted the fact while artificial intelligence can increase efficiency and innovations in all the sectors, there might be issues that arise.

Balancing Automation with Employment Protection

The meeting discussed on how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising conventional workplaces through automation of repetitive processes and data analytics. However, trade union delegates pointed out that workers, particularly those who work in occupations characterised by routine tasks, may be under higher threats without the necessary protective measures being taken.

Trade unions emphasised the need for improved labour policies that would facilitate the reskilling and upskilling of employees to be able to cope with the demands of the jobs. It was stressed by the trade unions that there is a need for coordination among the government, industry, and workers to prepare themselves for the arrival of the AI economy.

According to labour representatives, there is a need for AI to operate as an assisting technology that enhances human capabilities instead of replacing them.

Demand for Fair and Inclusive AI Adoption

The discussions further revolved around how the use of AI must ensure transparency and accountability, as well as respect the rights of the workers. The representatives stressed the need to avoid discrimination arising due to the decision-making systems and the distribution of technological advancements to all segments of society.

Labour unions demanded that while undergoing digital transformation, social security schemes and plans for transitioning the employment sector must be devised so that those affected by automation are not left out.

India Highlights Importance of Responsible Technology Growth

India’s participation in the BRICS Labour dialogue demonstrated its intention to promote technology as an engine of growth for the economy along with protecting the interests of the workers.

The BRICS Labour dialogue is an example of an attempt by emerging nations to develop a solution to problems faced by the workforce owing to automation and digitalization as countries across the world move towards rapid adoption of artificial intelligence technology in their manufacturing sector and elsewhere.

The meeting highlighted that the future of AI will depend not only on technological progress but also on how effectively countries ensure that workers remain central to the transformation.
