BRS leader T. Harish Rao has accused the Telangana government of mismanaging coal supplies and thermal power generation, alleging that the state is facing a severe power crisis.
Former Telangana minister and BRS leader T. Harish Rao has alleged that there is a very serious power problem in the state. He accused the Congress-led state government of poor planning, management of coal, and maintenance of thermal power generation in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Harish Rao stated that farmers were protesting against irregular power supply in 11 districts through demonstrations near electricity substations. He claimed that many thermal power plants, such as Kothagudem, Kakatiya, Bhadradri, and Yadadri, have coal stocks sufficient for only about a week, Moreover, some plants have ceased their operations because of coal shortage and maintenance problems.
Harish Rao said, "The Congress government has pushed Telangana into a severe power crisis because of its lack of foresight and failure in governance." He further alleged that "unannounced power cuts have become a daily occurrence across the state, causing hardship to farmers, students, traders and people from all sections of society."
However, he raised questions on the need for the state to purchase almost 80 million units of electricity per day at high costs from the electricity exchange when there is enough thermal generation capacity in Telangana. As per his estimate, only 3,190 MW of electricity was being generated compared to the thermal generation capacity of 7,180 MW.
Harish Rao made additional claims stating that good quality coal was supplied to the neighboring states by Singareni Collieries, whereas poor quality coal was supplied to the thermal stations in Telangana, thereby making thermal energy production less efficient. He demanded on restoring thermal generation capacity to its fullest and supply of good quality coal to the power stations without purchasing power.
The Telangana government has not publicly accepted Harish Rao's allegations, and the statements represent the opposition BRS leader's assessment of the state's power situation.
