Mahanagar Gas Limited has asked residents in gasified areas to apply for PNG connections after a government notification requiring eligible households to transition from LPG.
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has asked residents in areas where piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure is operational to apply for PNG connections following a government notification on the use of domestic cooking fuel.
The notification, issued by the Government of India under the Essential Commodities Act on March 24, 2026, states that urban households with access to PNG are required to shift from LPG. It also provides that LPG supply to eligible addresses may stop within 90 days from the date specified in individual notices.
MGL said housing societies in areas already connected to the PNG network have been requested to inform residents about the requirement. The company said the process is being carried out in coordination with oil marketing companies responsible for LPG distribution.
As per MGL, over 3.2 million households residing in Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Dharashiv, Chitradurga, and Davangere are currently supplied by MGL. It also stated that more than 8,000 kilometers of gas pipeline have been laid in these locations.
MGL recommended that all those households that haven’t registered yet for their PNG connections should do so at the earliest, since installation, connectivity, and commissioning would take about two months.
MGL has also introduced a zero-upfront cost registration process. The company said customers should not make payments to marketing agents, plumbers, or technicians during registration. Charges, where applicable, will be collected through official company channels after the application is processed.
Residents who have already obtained a PNG connection have been advised to surrender their LPG connection within 30 days.
MGL Managing Director Praveer Kumar Srivastava said the company has deployed customer service teams to assist consumers with registration and installation.
The government has expanded City Gas Distribution networks in several urban centres to increase the use of piped natural gas for domestic consumers. The latest notification applies to households where PNG infrastructure has already been commissioned.
