IHCL marked World Environment Day by highlighting the progress of its Paathya framework, focused on renewable energy, water conservation, waste management, and sustainable hospitality.
Designed as an ESG+ framework, Paathya brings together initiatives related to clean energy, water stewardship, waste reduction, circular operations, green mobility and responsible growth. The programme aims to balance environmental responsibility with community well-being while supporting the long-term sustainability of hospitality operations.
The company has recorded significant progress under the framework. In 2026, 41% of the electricity used came from renewables. Also, the big hospitality firm installed 386 EV charging stations at 171 spots, started 108 organic waste composting units, and created 85 in-house water bottling plants. This reduced plastic use and they managed to recycle 54% of their wastewater.
Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President – Human Resources, IHCL, said, “On World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to shaping a future where hospitality growth goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Our focus is on building scale with sensitivity from increasing renewable energy use and accelerating circular practices within our hotels to supporting water stewardship and conservation initiatives in the destinations and communities we are part of."
IHCL's sustainability program, Paathya, focuses more on water conservation. This year, the company started supporting projects for better water availability and conservation. They announced their water-related initiatives on World Water Day. Now, IHCL backs efforts like watershed restoration and rainwater harvesting in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. These projects also help revive old water bodies and increase groundwater recharge.
This work is expected to add up to over 50 lakh cubic metres of extra water within three years. Plus, it will give a hand to both local jobs and the environment's health.
Paathya helps make hospitality more circular too. They handle organic waste, recycle wastewater, and cut out single-use plastics. The company also avoid using commercial water bottles as they have introduced in-house bottling. This lowers their environmental footprint and promotes greener practices across hotel operations.
IHCL has set several sustainability goals for 2030 under its Paathya framework. These include sourcing 50% of its energy from renewable sources, recycling all wastewater, installing EV charging stations at every hotel, eliminating single-use plastics, and implementing organic waste management systems across all its properties.
This way, through Paathya, IHCL keeps pushing responsible tourism to boost environmental progress. They do this by joining solid operational changes with actions led by destinations, helping to create a stronger and more sustainable hospitality world.
