India Begins Countdown to Yoga Day 2025
The Ministry of Ayush has launched the countdown to International Day of Yoga 2025, with plans to celebrate nationwide, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Ministry of Ayush hosted the curtain raiser to start the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. This event officially started the countdown to the big celebration of Yoga Day on June 21st. The main event will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
During the event at the press conference, Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav talked about how far the International Day of Yoga (IDY) has come in the last 10 years and how successful its journey has been. He stated that, “When the United Nations General Assembly adopted 21st June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014—following the visionary call of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi—it marked the beginning of a global wellness movement rooted in India’s traditional wisdom”.
The Minister highlighted that since 2015, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated with great excitement all around the world. He said that from the first big event in New Delhi to important celebrations in places like Mysuru, New York, and Srinagar, every Yoga Day has brought people from different backgrounds together to promote good health, peace, and unity.
Highlighting the importance of this year’s Yoga Day, the Minister said that entering the 11th year is not just about celebrating — it’s about working together to make yoga more popular and accessible to everyone. He shared the theme for IDY 2025, ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’, matches the global health goals discussed during India’s G20 leadership. It also reflects India’s traditional belief in ‘Sarve Santu Niramaya’, which means “May everyone be healthy and free from illness.”
The Minister said that this year’s main International Day of Yoga (IDY) event will be held on June 21, 2025, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. A large yoga day session will be held there, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the session which is known as the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), with over five lakh people expected to join. At the same time, over one lakh yoga sessions will be held across India, making it one of the largest yoga events.
He also praised the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for starting the “YogaAndhra” campaign, which aims to build a community of 10 lakh regular yoga followers across the state.
The Minister added that IDY 2025 will include ten special events over 100 days. The aim of these events is to bring people together and tell people yoga is more than exercise. Events like "Yoga Samavesh" will focus on fullness, and "Yoga Bandhan" will focus on making stronger connections with other countries. The aim is to make yoga a part of everyday life not just something simply doing on yoga mat.He also mentioned that the countdown events—held at the 100-day, 75-day, 50-day, and 25-day marks in cities like Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Nashik, and Puducherry—have generated excitement and energy leading up to the main celebration.
Minister Prataprao Jadhav said, “Yoga is not just about poses and breathing exercises—it’s a way of living. With your support, we want to make IDY 2025 an inspiring event that encourages millions to make yoga a part of their everyday lives, helping build a healthier and happier society.”
In the press conference, P.N. Ranjit Kumar, Officer on Special Duty for IDY, gave a detailed presentation about the plans for IDY 2025. He talked about how the International Day of Yoga has become popular over the past 10 years. At the end of the presentation, he explained how the Ministry is using digital platforms, local support, and global cooperation to disseminate the message of “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” The goal is to make IDY more than just a celebration to promote health and well-being.
