Mission Senehjori aims to strengthen Assam’s Muga silk sector through improved production, infrastructure, branding, and export opportunities.
The state government has introduced Mission “Senehjori” that aims to position Assam's traditional Muga silk industry as a globally competitive luxury textile sector.
The mission was launched by Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia in collaboration with the state government, Ministry of Textiles and Central Silk Board and various stakeholders of the industry. This strategic move is targeted at achieving the full potential of the Muga silk, a naturally golden and GI-tagged silk unique to Assam, is produced by nearly 2.6 lakh rearers and weavers across the state and adjoining regions.
The mission will focus on key Muga-producing districts including Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli and Sualkuchi. It aims to improve the ecological health of host plants, improve seed yields, improve reeling and weaving facilities, establish farmer producer organisations (FPOs), establish common facility centres (CFCs), strengthen GI authentication systems and expand export avenues through a unified brand name called “Senehhori”.
Even though Muga silk is highly valued worldwide, it has not always translated into significant economic benefits for producers, according to officials. The mission wants to address this by implementing modernised production systems, digital traceability and creating structured market relationships that could help producers access premium international markets.
Under the initiative, an estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore is planned over three years, with a significant contribution from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). The project will also help in the growth of tourism through plans for a Muga Silk Trail and a Silk Tourism Park, which will enhance the cultural heritage and employment in rural areas, the project planners said.
At the launch event, Scindia reiterated the government's vision to ensure that producers benefit from the Muga silk value chain and position Assam as a global hub for luxury silk. The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the mission observing its potential to perpetuate cultural identity, generate sustainable livelihoods and new business opportunities across the state.
