India Prepares for Intensified Heatwave Conditions in May 2025

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a significant increase in heatwave days across the country for May 2025. This projection follows an early onset of extreme heat, with several regions already experiencing temperatures surpassing seasonal norms.

Forecast Overview

According to the IMD, most parts of India are expected to witness above-normal maximum temperatures in May, excluding regions in the northeast, extreme north, and parts of the southern peninsula. Specifically, areas such as south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat may experience 8 to 11 heatwave days, which is notably higher than the typical 3-day average for these regions in May. 

Other regions, including east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, Telangana, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu, are projected to face 5 to 7 heatwave days. The IMD defines a heatwave as a condition where the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C in the plains and is at least 4.5°C above the normal average.

The anticipated rise in temperatures poses significant risks to public health, agriculture, and infrastructure. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. 

In response, various states have initiated measures to mitigate the impact of the heatwave. These include revising school timings, preponing summer vacations, and adjusting polling schedules to avoid peak heat hours. 

Furthermore, the increased demand for electricity due to higher temperatures may strain power grids, potentially leading to outages. Authorities are advised to ensure adequate power supply and implement energy conservation strategies to manage the heightened demand.
