India’s growing solar manufacturing industry could supply European markets as demand for clean energy equipment rises, according to Renewables Norway CEO Bard Vegar Solhjell.
India's solar manufacturing sector could become a key supplier to Europe as the region looks to reduce its dependence on a limited number of clean energy equipment manufacturers, Renewables Norway CEO Bard Vegar Solhjell has said.
Speaking during his visit to India, Solhjell said the country has strengthened its solar manufacturing industry through policy support, growing domestic demand and increased production capacity. These developments, he said, could help Indian companies supply both the domestic market and overseas buyers.
India has steadily expanded its renewable energy sector over the past decade while encouraging local production of solar cells and modules. Government programmes aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing have helped increase production and reduce reliance on imports.
Solhjell said Europe will continue to require large volumes of solar equipment as countries expand renewable energy projects. India's manufacturing capacity, he said, places it in a position to meet part of that demand.
He also identified offshore wind, hydropower, and carbon capture and storage as areas where India and Norway could work together. Norway has experience in these technologies, while India offers a growing market for renewable energy development.
He said cooperation between companies from both countries could include technology sharing, industrial partnerships and investment in renewable energy projects, helping strengthen supply chains for clean energy technologies.
India is continuing to add solar power capacity while expanding domestic manufacturing of renewable energy equipment as part of its efforts to improve energy security and support industrial growth.
Meanwhile, European countries are seeking to diversify their sources of renewable energy equipment as they reduce dependence on a small number of global suppliers. India's expanding manufacturing base could help meet part of this demand.
Solhjell said India's rising electricity demand, growing economy and continued investment in renewable energy are likely to increase its role in the global clean energy sector. He said stronger cooperation between India and Europe could support trade and renewable energy deployment in both regions.
His remarks come as governments and businesses work to strengthen supply chains for renewable energy technologies amid rising global demand for solar equipment and other low-carbon technologies.
