India announces a new greenfield airport in Kalyani and a 2 lakh rooftop solar programme to enhance connectivity, economic growth and renewable energy adoption in West Bengal.

Kalyani Airport Project and Rooftop Solar Push to Drive West Bengal’s Growth

The government has announced plans for a new greenfield airport at Kalyani near Kolkata, West Bengal, and a massive rooftop solar installation programme to be deployed across the state to install 200,000 rooftop solar systems in West Bengal. The decision comes as part of a wider plan to improve connectivity, drive regional economic development and increase the region's renewable energy contribution, officials said.

The proposed greenfield airport, which is planned to serve the Kolkata metro area and its adjacent districts, is expected to ease the congestion in the existing airport infrastructure and cater to the increasing demand for air travel. The project would improve the access to the region, create jobs and attract investment in the value-added activities, including logistics, tourism and manufacturing, authorities said.

The government has also initiated the rooftop solar rollout programme for West Bengal on a large scale, in concert with the airport plan. The scheme involves the installation of 2 lakh rooftop solar systems on residential, commercial & industrial rooftops. The programme is designed to drive up clean energy uptake, lower the electricity bills for consumers and help the state achieve its climate mitigation targets.

In this regard, officials pointed out that the rooftop solar initiative is in tandem with India's national renewable energy targets and will help to reduce carbon emissions and promote distributed energy generation through replacing fossil fuel based power generation. A combination of supportive policies, financial incentives and streamlined approvals will be essential to reach the ambitious installation target in the agreed time frame, government representatives said.

These twin announcements, a new airport and a larger rollout of rooftop solar, demonstrate the government's dual interests of infrastructure development and transition to sustainable energy. Policymakers aim to spur inclusive, climate-scenario-appropriate, economic growth through improving physical connectivity while adding clean energy at the local level.

The initiatives received a positive response from industry observers, who believe that better connectivity and the increased share of renewable energy will help increase investment confidence, enhance the quality of life of residents and help West Bengal achieve a better contribution to national development agendas.
