Oil India has partnered with Canada’s PTRC to develop CCUS, geothermal energy, and clean technology solutions supporting the global energy transition.

Oil India Expands Clean Energy Focus with CCUS and Geothermal Partnership

Oil India Limited (OIL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Canada’s Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) to collaborate on clean energy technologies, including Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, and other innovative solutions supporting the global energy transition.

The joint initiative seeks to promote greater collaboration between India and Canada in the development of technology that will aid in the reduction of carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency to transition into a low-carbon future.

The partnership was signed in Calgary, Canada at the Global Energy Show 2026 where leaders from the global energy industry met to explore the future of the sector.

According to the pact, PTRC and Oil India will collaborate in the field of research, knowledge exchange, and innovation pertaining to carbon management and clean energy solutions. This collaboration will target innovations relating to the CCUS process that involves the capture of carbon dioxide emitted through industrial processes and the subsequent underground storage of this gas or its use in some other process.

CCUS is becoming an important technology for reducing emissions, especially in industries where complete replacement of fossil fuels remains challenging. The technology can help companies lower their carbon footprint while supporting the transition towards cleaner energy systems.

Moreover, both firms will also seek opportunities in using geothermal energy which is a form of renewable energy technology wherein the energy comes from the heat of the Earth’s core. Unlike other forms of renewable energy technology, this type of technology can supply energy and heat constantly since it does not require any environmental factor for it to work.

Additionally, the partnership will also involve studying subsurface technologies that pertain to geology, underground storage, and energy applications.

Both the companies, through this alliance, will also foster innovation in terms of clean energy technology and innovation. It will be an attempt at driving the use of innovations and technologies that could help achieve decarbonization goals.

On the other hand, for Oil India Limited, this is just another attempt at broadening its horizon from the oil and gas business operations to something beyond that. In recent years, Oil India Limited has made several attempts to invest in renewable energies.

Canada has much expertise in carbon capture and storage initiatives, hence making PTRC a suitable partner in exchange of knowledge and technical expertise. The partnership may promote the development and use of advanced technologies in clean energy in India.

This partnership comes at a time when nations are concentrating on reduction in emissions, improving energy security, and finding options apart from fossil fuels. With growing demand for energy, advanced technologies like CCSU and geothermal energy are anticipated to play an important part.

The Oil India–PTRC collaboration highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in developing practical solutions for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
