Delhi Feels Rain In Air As Clouds Promise A Break From Summer’s Grip
Delhi is likely to experience a thunderstorm and lightning today.
Delhi woke up today under a grey, heavy sky — not the usual blazing June sun. Instead of the dry, punishing heat, the city was wrapped in a warm, humid hug, making even a slow morning walk feel sticky. But for most, it was a welcome change. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) says rain is on the horizon — light to moderate showers expected by evening — and that’s music to everyone’s ears.
Later tonight, the skies might not just drizzle but rumble too. IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds gusting at 40 to 50 kmph, with some peaks possibly hitting 60. It might be just the cleanse Delhi’s air and spirit need.
Yesterday’s high was 35°C — a full four degrees cooler than usual — bringing a bit of relief from the season’s extremes. The minimum stayed at a normal 28°C. Thankfully, no heatwave yesterday, and none expected this week either.
Rain teased the city last night — just a few scattered drops here and there — not enough to soak, but enough to stir hope. Humidity, however, stayed high, swinging between 60 and 81%. Eastern winds offered a mild breeze, but not quite enough to ease the stickiness.
“It’s been clammy since morning, but honestly, I’ll take this over 45 degrees any day. I’m just waiting for those clouds to open up,” said Reena Batra, a homemaker in East Delhi, wiping sweat off her brow while glancing at the sky.
The weather office expects these overcast conditions to last a bit longer. Tomorrow looks much the same — warm, cloudy, and likely wet by evening. On June 19 and 20, light showers may continue, with occasional thunder. But the real relief is expected between June 21 and 23, when moderate rainfall and storms could sweep across the region, bringing stronger winds and lightning.
These weather patterns are expected across all parts of Delhi — from East to West and North to South — and in neighbouring cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Faridabad.
As the day rolls on and the clock ticks toward the 7:21 PM sunset, umbrellas might start popping open — not for shade this time, but for rain. And if the clouds finally give in, Delhiites might just find themselves standing outside, faces lifted to the sky, letting the storm wash off a bit of summer fatigue.
