Uttar Pradesh Plans 18 Division-Level Rehab Centres
The state government will now operate DDRCs using its own resources; centres to provide disability services under one roof.
The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a proposal to open District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) at all 18 major headquarters of the state. The centres will be set up and operated using state government resources. It will be replaced by the earlier model where only 37 districts received support from the Central Government. Now, the state government will set up and manage these centres on its own.
Currently, only 11 of the existing 37 DDRCs in Uttar Pradesh are located at divisional headquarters. With the new decision, every divisional centre will host a fully functional rehabilitation facility aimed at improving accessibility and service delivery for persons with disabilities.
Minister of State for Backward Class Welfare and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Narendra Kashyap, said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, had directed to take further action in the direction of setting up District Disabled Rehabilitation Centres at all the mandal headquarters, after which the Cabinet gave formal approval to this proposal. He said that this new system run by the Yogi Government will make service delivery for Divyangjan more transparent, accessible, time bound and effective.
Services to Be Offered at the New Centres
The newly approved centres will provide a wide range of disability-related services, including:
- Disability surveys and identification
- Organization of disability assessment camps
- Repair and maintenance of assistive devices
- Fabrication and fitting of artificial limbs
- Gait and usage training
- Device distribution and early intervention
- Awareness programmes for disability prevention
The centres will also provide necessary clinical services like counselling, physiotherapy and speech therapy so that treatment and rehabilitation support to Divyangjans and their families will be accessible at the local level. Currently, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment operates DDRCs in several states, but their distribution remains uneven.
The decision to set up these centres in Uttar Pradesh using state funds is an important change to make services accessible. Officials said the new model is expected to reduce delays and bring services closer to their homes, especially in remote and less developed area.
