ENGIE has obtained financial closure for its 250 MW Khaba Solar Project in the Barmer region of Rajasthan, permitting the commencement of construction. The project is planned to be set up by Khaba Renewable Energy Private Limited, which is a wholly owned arm of the ENGIE Group.

By the end of the third quarter of 2026, construction is anticipated to be completed. Once running, the solar plant shall produce around 650 GWh of electricity annually. This is expected to avoid approximately 180 kilotonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, according to the company.

The project financing has been secured from a coalition of international financial institutions. ENGIE stated that the financial closure shall aid in pursuing the current step of the project implementation, indicating continuous investments in the renewable energy sphere of the Indian economy.

Moreover, the project execution is expected to create job opportunities during the construction period, with around 80 per cent of jobs being occupied through residents of the communities in the vicinity, facilitating local economic development.

Amit Jain, Chief Executive Officer and Country Manager, India, and Managing Director, Renewables and Batteries, Southeast Asia, ENGIE, said the project marks another step in the company's renewable energy expansion in India. He said the company remains focused on delivering large-scale renewable energy infrastructure while supporting the country's long-term clean energy goals.

The Khaba Solar Project adds to ENGIE's renewable energy portfolio in India, where the company has investments across solar, wind, battery storage and integrated renewable energy projects. The company said it will continue to expand its presence through investments and partnerships in the sector.

ENGIE entered the Indian market in 2014 and is headquartered in Pune. The company has stated that it aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045 and continues to develop renewable energy projects in line with India's clean energy targets.

India has significantly expanded its renewable energy capacity over the past decade, with solar power emerging as one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity generation. Utility-scale solar projects such as the Khaba Solar Project are expected to contribute to increasing renewable energy capacity while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Rajasthan continues to be regarded as one of the top solar power-producing states in India given its abundance of solar irradiation, the availability of extensive land expanses as well as the presence of favorable policy frameworks. The district of Barmer has also been receiving multiple significant investments for renewable energy projects in the past few years owing to its suitable weather. 

The financial closure of the Khaba Solar Project creates an important landmark before the commencement of the construction process on the full scale. The project will become impactful with the completion of the construction phase by providing renewable electricity to the grid and enhancing India's clean energy capacity. 

The completion of the construction of the project is planned for the third quarter of the year 2026, thus contributing to the transition to renewable energy sources of electricity production in the country as one more utility-scale solar project in the state of Rajasthan.
