Kolkata Airport is advancing its sustainability efforts by increasing solar energy use, expanding electric vehicle operations, and strengthening its green infrastructure initiatives.

Kolkata Airport Expands Green Push with Solar Power and EV Adoption

The airport is further moving towards sustainability by replacing diesel use with solar energy and promoting electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce its carbon footprint, according to airport officials.

Airport Director Vikram Singh today said at the Yatri Suvidha Diwas 2026 event that Kolkata Airport is largely powered from solar panels exceeding the total use of electricity. The 17.5 MW solar installation, spread across 65.7 acres, generates clean electricity, with surplus power being fed into the state grid.

The majority of ground vehicles on the airport campus are electric vehicles, helping reduce emissions from ground operations. Singh said that the airport was also working towards phasing out fossil fuel vehicles in the near future, as part of its efforts to become green.

The airport authority is also set to enhance greenery in the terminal complex, doubling the number of plants in passenger areas in the coming months as part of a wider environmental and aesthetic improvement programme.

Kolkata Airport has achieved Level 2 Airport Carbon Accredited Airport by the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) by Airports Council International (Asia-Pacific) for its efforts to measure and take steps to reduce emissions from its airport activities (except aircraft emissions). It reached this rating after getting its first accreditation four years ago in 2019.

Kolkata airport’s sustainable initiatives will put it among various other Indian airports which have opted for operations that focus on sustainability. In the entire country, there are quite a number of facilities that have decided to go green by opting for solar power, efficiency measures, and electric vehicles in order to curb greenhouse emissions.

The transition to non-renewable sources to renewable sources and EVs by Kolkata Airport will help support the aviation industry’s efforts towards greener infrastructures and reduced emissions.
