The Centre launched PMGSY-IV in Madhya Pradesh with new rural road, housing and connectivity projects worth thousands of crores aimed at improving village infrastructure across the state.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday launched PMGSY-IV during the 25-year celebrations of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Bhairunda, located in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district. During the event, the Centre announced several major road, housing and rural development projects for the state.
The programme was attended by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Ministers, state ministers and senior government officials.
Under the PMGSY IV scheme, Madhya Pradesh has received approval for 973 roads covering total distance of 2,117.52 kilometers with and estimated cost of ₹1,763.08 crore. The project is expected to improve connectivity to 987 villages in the state. According to the MP government, the Vidisha parliamentary constituency alone has been sanctioned 259 roads worth over 600 kilometers which will connect 264 villages.
According to MP government, more than ₹500 crore worth of roads will be built in the Vidisha parliamentary constituency. It was also informed that no village would be left without proper connectivity under his leadership.
As per the PM-JANMAN scheme, a total of 384.34 kilometres worth of roads were sanctioned at a total cost of ₹261.81 crore. The roads are expected to improve connectivity in remote and underdeveloped areas. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh has been allotted ₹830 crore under the PMGSY funding for the financial year 2026-27.
The Union Minister also handed over a sanction worth ₹2,055 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) to the Madhya Pradesh government for rural housing projects. He said eligible families identified through surveys would receive permanent housing benefits after verification.
During the event, Chouhan also spoke about women’s self-help groups and said efforts under the Lakhpati Didi scheme would continue to support women’s income generation and financial independence.
On farmer-related issues, he said procurement processes for wheat farmers would continue without discrimination and pending verification work would be completed. He also mentioned efforts to improve land acquisition systems to ensure better benefits for farmers.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the Madhya Pradesh government is working closely with the Centre to address development demands related to roads, irrigation, water supply, housing and public infrastructure.
The event also recognised states for their performance under PMGSY over the last 25 years. Madhya Pradesh ranked first among large states for the highest rural road construction, completing 90,766 kilometres of roads. Bihar ranked first in connecting the highest number of habitations under the scheme.
Gujarat secured the best among large states for using eco-friendly and green technology while building rural roads. Whereas Uttar Pradesh was recognised for spending the most of money on rural road maintenance.
Assam came out on top among North Eastern and hill states in terms of constructing the longest rural road lengths and linking the maximum numbers of villages under the scheme.
The launch of PMGSY-IV marks the beginning of the next phase in the rural road scheme. The Government is focusing more at improving village connectivity across India by building better, stronger and long-lasting roads. Better roads help Indians to travel more and smoothly
