Nagpur has emerged as one of India's leading rooftop solar districts, recording 89,255 installations and strengthening the country's transition towards clean and decentralised energy.
The latest government data shows a significant achievement in the clean energy revolution in Nagpur district as it has become the second highest district in India to have the maximum rooftop solar installations under the government's rooftop solar programme, marking the Prime Minister. The district's solar rooftops are a testament to the growing community participation and the transition to decentralised renewable energy solutions, as 89,255 installations have already been achieved.
As part of the national efforts to increase clean energy generation and decrease reliance on fossil fuels, the initiative to promote rooftop solar power offers incentives and assistance to homes, businesses, and institutions to install rooftop solar panels. The programme is designed to maximise the use of solar energy generation potential in urban and rural areas, to decrease electricity cost and carbon emissions.
Proactive coordination at the district level and awareness programmes, along with the active involvement of the residents and commercial establishments, are attributed for Nagpur's high ranking. There has been close collaboration between local authorities and energy agencies to streamline the installation process, to provide financing and to guarantee quality standards of solar systems.
According to officials, the proliferation of rooftop solar installations not only has helped to reduce pollution in the generation of electrical power but also has spurred local entrepreneurship in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of rooftop solar systems. It has led to employment creation, and has grown the green technology ecosystem in the region.
If rooftop solar is universally adopted, then it can reduce the strain on the electricity grid, at least in the summer when demand peaks, says energy analysts. Distributed solar generation further promotes energy security and resilience by allowing the distribution of electricity power closer to the sites of consumption.
The rooftop solar programme is part of the National Solar Mission, a strategy to achieve significant solar power capacity boosts in India by 2030. The spread of rooftop installations across the country is paving the way for solar solutions to become the norm in community participation areas such as Nagpur.
People who have installed rooftop solar panels have indicated that their electricity bills have decreased after solar and that they are gaining independence regarding electricity consumption. With such positive movies from different high performing districts, officials believe that neighbouring regions will emulate these districts and help in India's clean energy journey.
