NeoCarbon, a pioneering startup in the field of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, has achieved a major milestone by producing its first batch of concrete using CO2 captured directly from the air. This achievement not only shows the innovative approach of the company towards industrial decarbonization but also underlines the possibility of greener solutions in the cement industry, which currently accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions.

The successful integration of captured CO2 into concrete production was made possible through NeoCarbon's strategic partnership with Carbonaide, a company specializing in CO2 mineralization. Leveraging Carbonaide's expertise, NeoCarbon was able to embed CO2 into concrete through a process known as carbon curing. This method chemically bonds CO2 with concrete, creating a stronger and more environmentally friendly product.

Tapio Vehmas, the CEO of Carbonaide, said: "By utilizing NeoCarbon's Direct Air Capture technology, we intend to scale a modular and flexible CO2 supply, thereby making the CO2 value chain more efficient." It is one of the first steps toward making the world's most carbon-intensive industries a better place for a climate-conscious world.

The technology itself relies on the sequestration of CO2 from the waste heat of cooling towers. After this, the captured carbon dioxide is injected into the curing chamber, where it is chemically bonded to concrete during curing. It is estimated that on average every cubic meter of concrete can absorb 140 kilograms or 308 pounds of CO2. NeoCarbon used biogenic waste and one kilogram or 2.2 pounds of captured carbon in its first batch through the DAC pilot program called NeoDuo.

Currently, the company runs two independent DAC modules, the most recent of which can absorb as much as five tons of CO2 per annum. NeoCarbon CEO René Haas said, "This milestone marks a major step in our mission to decarbonize the cement and concrete industry." The company is now focused on scaling its operations to capture 62.5 tons of CO2 per year, a goal that will further solidify its position as a leader in sustainable concrete production.

Its technology is modular and autonomous, allowing for easy integration with current industrial processes, providing flexibility and saving on cost to reduce carbon emissions.
