26 Lakh+ Homes Benefit as PM Surya Ghar Rooftop Solar Push Gains Pace

Data presented in Parliament shows that under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, as of December 2025, over 26 lakh households have benefited from the program, with ₹14,771 crore provided as central financial assistance.

The information was given by Shripad Yesso Naik, the Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, in a response to a written question asked by a Rajya Sabha member about the progress made in setting up rooftop solar systems since it was introduced in February 2024.

According to Government statistics, there are now 20,85,514 rooftop solar (RTS) systems installed in total and these systems have provided benefits to 26,14,446 residential households. Under this scheme, residential customers with access to grid-connected electricity from their local DISCOMs can apply to have a rooftop solar installation through a `national portal.'

The Minister indicated that this is a `demand-driven' scheme which has no limits on the number of users, but there is generally no fixed gap on the number of eligible households in each state. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have the largest number of installations to date, followed by Kerala and Rajasthan, as provided by state breakdowns.

According to government officials, Gujarat is leading the nation in terms of rooftop solar installation. The state has installed over 5.15 lakh systems for more than 7.4 lakh households. The states of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh together account for over 7 lakh rooftop systems installed in either state. In contrast, the northeast and hilly regions reported much lower installation numbers.

The government estimates that if 1 crore homes install rooftop solar systems, it would produce approximately 1000 billion units of renewable electricity over time. Officials noted that this would result in a reduction of approximately 720 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) during the 25-year life span of the systems.

The central financial assistance made available through the scheme will support the installation costs of rooftop solar systems and encourage the adoption of distributed renewable energy at the household level.

The further expansion of the scheme will be dependent on consumer demand, the configuration of the distribution grid, and coordination with state electric utility companies, as well as continued monitoring of the progress of the program through periodic reporting to Parliament.
