PeakAmp and Curve Electric partner to improve EV battery recycling, traceability and regulatory compliance.

PeakAmp, Curve Electric Partner for EV Battery Recycling

PeakAmp, a company specializing in battery circularity and resource recovery, has signed a multi-year Service Level Agreement (SLA) with electric mobility startup Curve Electric to build on the management of end-of-life batteries in its operations. The partnership will focus on enhancing battery collection, recycling, traceability, and regulatory compliance, contributing to the development of India's rapidly growing EV industry.

The partnership is taking place in an era where battery recycling in India, electric mobility, and battery circularity are emerging as significant focus areas for the drive towards clean transport in the country. With the ongoing increase in EV adoption, there has been growing interest in how to manage the disposal of EV batteries in a responsible and sustainable way, and how to recover resources from them. The partnership between the two companies aims to tackle these issues with a systematic approach that fits in with the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mandate.

Building Partnership to Strengthen Battery Lifecycle Management.

As part of the deal, PeakAmp will handle the collection, reverse logistics and eco-responsible recycling of the end-of-life batteries resulting from Curve Electric's activities. Based in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Curve Electric is an e-bike rental and sales platform, building up its presence in the field of electric mobility in India.

The plan aims to keep batteries being collected via formal channels and recycled as per environmental guidelines when they come to the end of their function. The companies hope to put in place a robust recovery process that will minimize the flow of used batteries into the informal recycling market, where handling can be hazardous to both the environment and the worker.

Replace batteries and provide customer service.Replace batteries and Customer Support.

In addition, the partnership will see PeakAmp become Curve Electric's official battery exchange provider. Those who use Curve Electric's e-bikes will get a structured battery replacement program that enables them to return used batteries via a buy back system.

It is hoped that the battery exchange system will make battery replacement easier for the customer and ensure that the spent batteries are picked up via authorised routes. These are seen as a key element of the circular economy, where products and materials are recovered, reused or recycled rather than disposed of as waste.

The primary focus will be on Regulatory Compliance.

In addition to battery collection and recycling, PeakAmp will support Curve Electric in fulfilling their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals by providing recycling certificates and documentation as per the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines in India.

The company will also provide support to comply with the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, which will provide end to end traceability of batteries in their lifecycle. The documentation will be used as a tool to assist in the proper recording and implementation of battery disposal and recycling activities, in compliance with the regulatory requirements.

Industry Perspective

Aditya Sudhanshu, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of PeakAmp, commented on the partnership, saying that responsible battery management should grow in tandem with the growing popularity of EVs.

He explained that the partnership with Curve Electric will provide an opportunity to ensure end-of-life batteries are collected, recycled and put back into the circular economy, while also making battery replacement easier for customers. Such collaborations help create a transparent, compliant and sustainable EV ecosystem in India, he said.

Supporting LTSCGs

Sheikh Yameen, CEO and Co-Founder of Curve Electric, referred to the deal as a unique recycling program and went on to say that it will be a sustainable investment in sustainable mobility.

As Curve Electric continues to roll out its nationwide network of batteries and retail stores, PeakAmp will be crucial in helping to maintain traceability, compliance and responsible recovery of batteries at the end of their useful life, he said. He noted that the collaboration will help in building an ecosystem for developing battery circularity over the next five years, and enhance their ESG commitments and efficiency.

The growing importance of the Circular Economy in EVs is also included. The importance of Circular Economy in EVs is also growing.

The collaboration is part of a larger movement in India's electric mobility industry where companies are adopting circular economy principles to their business model. With the growth of battery-powered transportation, battery collection, recycling and resource recovery systems are playing an increasingly important role in reducing environmental impacts and obtaining precious raw materials.

Industry participants strongly agree on the need of increased battery traceability to ensure battery handling is processed through authorized battery recycling channels. Compliance documentation and reverse logistics are expected to aid in improving resource recovery along with formal collection networks, while helping to meet environmental goals.

As the EV market grows, partnerships around responsible battery lifecycle management are likely to gain significance in India. The collaboration between PeakAmp and Curve Electric aims to support a more structured battery management system and help build sustainable electric mobility in the country through the battery exchange programme and its compliance with battery recycling regulations.
