The Centre has approved the procurement of Khopra and Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu under the Price Support Scheme and Market Intervention Scheme to support farmers amid falling market prices.

Tamil Nadu Farmers to Benefit from Centre's Khopra and Totapuri Mango Procurement

The government has permitted large-scale procurement of Khopra and Totapuri mangoes to support farmers in Tamil Nadu, offering significant relief from the volatility in the market price and distress selling of Khopra and Totapuri mangoes.

In 2026, the procurement of 87,226 MT of Khopra (including 87,000 MT of milling copra and 226 MT of ball copra) was approved by the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in Tamil Nadu. The entire procurement will be done at MSP under the Price Support Scheme (PSP), with the total MSP value of the approved procurement likely to exceed ₹1,049.16 crore. The order seeks to provide remunerative prices to copra growers and protect them from distress sales due to the drop in market prices.

In another relief measure, Chouhan also sanctioned the procurement of 96,879 metric tonnes of Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), with the Market Intervention Price (MIP) fixed at ₹1,545.41 per quintal. The objective of the intervention is to safeguard the interests of Totapuri mango growers against losses caused by the sharp fall in mango prices and provide price stability and better returns for the growers.

The proposals were put forward by the government of Tamil Nadu, and both approvals were granted. They are expected to provide income support to farmers, boost the rural economy, and strengthen the agriculture sector. Assured procurement at MSP and MIS prices will give farmers greater confidence that the government will procure their produce at the notified prices.
