US Rejects UN Sustainable Development Goals, Citing Sovereignty Concerns

The US, under the Trump administration, has formally rejected and condemned the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), a major global honour set in 2015 in response to environmental and social challenges under the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reported by ESG Today.

The announcement was made by Edward Heartney, Counselor for Economic and Social Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the UN, during the General Assembly on the setting up of an International Day of Peaceful Coexistence, thereby reaffirming support for the 2030 Agenda.

Heartney denounced the SDGs as soft global governance, claiming that they conferred stricture upon U.S. sovereignty and the rights of Americans. He stated that the U.S. administration was engaging in a "course correction" with respect to gender and climate policies that "pervade the SDGs."

This departs from a backdrop of Trump administration withdrawals from international sustainability and climate commitments: out of the Paris Agreement and scaling back climate financing initiatives. Heartney affirmed the administration's view by shutting:

"Globalist endeavors like Agenda 2030 and the SDGs lost at the ballot box. Therefore, the United States rejects and denounces the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and it will no longer reaffirm them as a matter of course."
