Canada and India are strengthening cooperation in critical minerals, renewable energy, and clean technologies to build resilient supply chains and support global energy transition goals.
Canada has recognised important avenues for further cooperation with India on critical minerals, clean energy technologies, and energy transition investments, reflecting an enhanced pathway for bilateral cooperation on issues at the core of Canada and India's climate and economic priorities.
Senior officials from the Canadian government highlighted India's swift progress in renewable energy deployment, electric mobility, and low-carbon industrial infrastructure as an appealing area for strategic cooperation on the sidelines of the Clean Energy Ministerial in Canada.
Critical minerals — such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements — play a vital role in battery manufacturing, green hydrogen production, and other clean technologies, making them a focal point for joint efforts.
Cooperation was also highlighted by the officials in view of the fact that India could gain from the cooperation with Canada through its abundant mineral deposits and mining technology while on the other hand, Canada could utilize India’s developing clean energy value chain through collaboration. The two sides have discussed, among other areas, creating smoother supply chain integration, establishing common sustainable mining standards, and promoting collaboration in research on recycling and material reuse.
Besides minerals, officials said that there are a number of avenues for clean energy cooperation, such as developing renewable energy projects, grid integration solutions, and innovations in hydrogen and battery technologies. The Canadian delegation stressed the important role of the private sector in scaling these partnerships, as well as the importance of supportive policy frameworks in both countries to lower barriers to trade and investment in climate-aligned sectors.
Increasing cooperation in critical minerals and clean energy is also in line with the broader global trend, as nations are looking for reliable and diversified suppliers of essential materials for clean energy while expanding economic relations with like-minded partners, analysts said. Greater cooperation between India and Canada can also help build resilient global value chains and strengthen joint climate action through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and other international forums.
The dialogue also reflected both sides' desire to strengthen the bilateral partnership for long-term strategic cooperation in the new era going beyond energy cooperation to all-round industrial development and emerging technology.
