State-owned NHPC has begun commercial operations of a 250 MW unit at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, strengthening power supply in the North-Eastern region as capacity is added in phases.
NHPC has commissioned another 250 MW unit at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, taking the project a step closer to its planned total capacity of 2,000 MW. Once fully completed, Subansiri will rank among the largest hydropower projects in the country.
NHPC expects this new unit to provide additional generating capacity for the Northeast Region. The project previously had two already-operating 250 MW units, and additional capacity will be added as the project is being built out.
In terms of environmental concerns, the Subansiri Project is being developed by the Ministry of Power in line with the objectives of the Government's broader clean energy initiative. The use of large hydropower projects is viewed as important to help produce reliable electricity and allow for the integration of solar and wind generation into the national electric grid.
The construction period of the Subansiri Project created local jobs and supported the economy in the surrounding area. Once Subansiri has been fully commissioned, it will provide direct benefits to residential and commercial customers through an improved supply of electricity.
NHPC has a renewable energy portfolio spanning hydropower, solar, and wind projects across the country. The company continues to expand capacity in line with India’s energy transition plans.
The additional units at Subansiri will be coming online in the next few months to enhance electricity supplies and assist India in producing more low-carbon electrical energy.
